PLANNING YOUR MOVE and the SECRETS OF TIPPING
PLANNING YOUR MOVE:
Consult this planning checklist to ensure that you attend to the important details before your move:
Arrange for the transfer of your phone, gas, and electricity at least three weeks before your move.
Check your insurance coverage to be sure that your belongings are protected against breakage. If you are not covered by a homeowner's policy, Brownstone has replacement insurance available through CHUBB, an insurance company with an excellent reputation.
Since you may want immediate access to them, consider carrying remote controls for tvs, stereos, etc. on your own person. You may also want to color code (e.g. red marking pen or label) your boxes of personal stuff to which you need immediate access.
Update your mover on any changes of dates or contents ASAP.
SECRETS OF TIPPING:
History
About 30 years ago, in New York City, movers working for a very large "lower cost" moving company all began to ask for large tips as they presented the bill. This practice became popular throughout the five boroughs, and was actively discouraged by only a handful of moving companies. Thus was born the tradition that movers in NYC receive higher tips than anywhere else in the U.S.
Practice Our employees are not allowed to ask for a tip and it is considered bad form for them to show disappointment on not receiving one. Happy customers tip anywhere between $6- $10 per man per hour. (If you need help calculating man-hours, feel free to ask the formeman for help.)
